Baltimore jazz

Baltimore jazz is a major part of the music of Baltimore, Maryland, and is a field that has produced several popular musicians, including Billie Holiday, Cab Calloway, Chick Webb, and Cyrus Chestnut, as well as local performers like Ethel Ennis and Rivers Chambers.

Jazz was documented in Baltimore in 1917, the same year John Ridgely organized his band. The Royal Theatre was a venue for jazz. Its house orchestra was led by Rivers Chambers and then Tracy McCleary. Baltimore musicians also include Mickey Fields, Gary Bartz, and Gary Thomas.
